The beautiful and historic windjammers that sail Penobscot Bay out of Camden and Rockland, Maine, are famous for their food. Some of the food is hearty New England fare (“good food and plenty of it,” as they say), some is worthy of a cutting-edge restaurant.
But the highlight of a windjammer cruise is always the Lobster Bake on the beach. This meal is highly anticipated by the guests and appreciated by the galley crew—as it gets them out of the galley for the evening. There’s often an air of mystery that develops around where and when the Lobster Bake will take place. Only the captain knows for sure and even he or she can’t always predict the weather. What’s required is a mild evening and a beautiful beach—preferably with a view of the sunset. Not to mention, lobsters, clams, hot dogs, and all the fixings!
